Speaking at the Cheltenham Literary Festival with fellow contributor to The Too Difficult Box, Margaret Hodge MP, Charles Clarke called on the political parties to cut the sloganeering and engage with big issues in a mature and bipartisan way.The minister-cum-academic commented:
We really have to get democratic politics to come together because large numbers of voters now say "bollocks to the lot of you".
Clarke and Hodge agreed on the need for politicians to be honest on the benefits of immigration and the difficult spending choices awaiting future governments, and discussed alternative revenue raising methods.
